The resulting keishi pearls consist of a solid-nacre composition that gives them the extreme high luster. Keishi pearls come in a wide variety of colours. Because there was no nucleus to guide the shaping of the pearl, their shapes vary widely.
Keishi means 'poppy seed' in Japanese and these pearls are also referred to as 'poppy seed pearls'.
